France AF Aircraft Not Used

by the French Air Force

This page gives details of some of the aircraft types that were offered or promised to the French Air Force but not delivered, cancelled official orders, and types have been falsely reported as being in service.

1918
The following aircraft types were ordered by the French Air Force in 1918, but had not been delivered by the time of the Armistice in November 1918, when many orders were cancelled:
Sopwith Dolphin Mk II – none delivered.

1940
The following aircraft were ordered by the French Air Force in 1939/40, but had not been delivered by the time of the Armistice in June 1940:
Consolidated LB-30 (B-24 Liberator) – 120 a/c ordered but not delivered in time.
Curtiss H81 A1 Tomahawk – 140 a/c ordered but none delivered by June 1940.
Douglas DB-7A / Havoc II – 200 a/c ordered but none delivered before the surrender. This was a follow-up to the initial order for the DB-7 B3 variant, which WAS delivered.
Northrop (Douglas) A-17 Nomad – 93 ordered, none delivered.
25 Stinson 105s were loaded onto the carrier Bearn in 1940 for AdlA use but France surrended while the ship was en route.

Prototypes
Note: The French Air Force has evaluated a large number of prototypes during its existence, and aircraft that were built with air force funds AND carried air force roundels can be considered French Air Force aircraft. The following aircraft are associated with the air force, but are not believed to have fulfilled this criteria.
