Inverness was one of the new bases established under the ten-year UK SAR contract awarded to Bristow Helicopters in March 2013. Due to issues with the full certification of the AgustaWestland AW189 search and rescue helicopter, two Sikorsky S-92 were used instead for the first year of operations. The first helicopter arrived in January 2015. The facility was officially opened on 17 March 2015, and became operational on 1 April 2015. The service is available 24 hours a day.
