The unit has its origins in the Grupo Aéreo de Entrenamiento y Transporte. The group was split in 1988 and the Grupo Aéreo de Entrenamiento and the Grupo de Transporte Aéreo became operational. The unit was renamed as Grupo Aéreo de Instrucción on 20.1.1992.
