Unit History

No.4 Squadron
(Motto: 'Seek And Strike')

The unit was first formed in January 1956 at Thornhill, and was tasked with internal security using the Provost T.52. In January 1964 it also took on the role of basic flying training. In August 1967 the unit took delivery of all the Aermacchi AL.60 Trojans and passed all its Provosts to No.6 Sqn. In 1976 the Trojans were supplemented by FTB.337 Lynx aircraft. The squadron aircraft operated in the light ground attack, FAC, SAR, visual reconnaissance and casevac roles. When the Trojans were sold off post-independence, the unit continued to operate the Lynx. Moved to New Sarum to convert to Lynx. Still in the internal security role with the Lynx.
