Unit History

Flying Training School
Role: Aircrew Training

From late 1947, a British Services Mission was assisting the UBAF in the recruitment and training of new staff. A Flying Training School was established at Meiktila in 1948, equipped with Tiger Moths. In May 1948 five aircraft were operational. Of the 13 DH.82As received, five were not yet assembled or in storage, two had been written off, and one had been issued as a ground instructional airframe. In 1949, a number of Oxfords arrived. Some of these were issued to the FTS, while others were operated by an unspecified unit at Mingaladon AFB.

The MAF Flying Training School is now based at Namsang. It is likely that the FTS also doubles as a COIN unit, as most of their aircraft can be equipped with a variety of light machine guns, rockets and other ordnance. Twelve K-8 were delivered, with the last arriving in January 2000. Twelve PC-7 are currently reported in service - it is unclear if this number includes any PC-9s, which is also in MAF service. Two G.4 Super Galeb were observed at Mingaladon in November 2005.
