Aircraft Types NOT Used
This page gives details of some of the aircraft types that were offered or promised to the various air arms of Cambodia but not delivered, cancelled official orders, and types that have been falsely reported as being in service.
Aviation Royale Khmere, AVRK, 1954 to 1970:
Curtiss C-46 Commando
Six C-46 Commandos were reported in service from the mid 1950s to the early 1970s. This may result from confusion with commercial operators or Air America operations in the country.
Mikoyan Gurevitch MiG-15/MiG-15bis/Shenyang F-2
The only variant of the MiG-15 operated by the Cambodian military forces was the MiG-15UTI. Possible confusion with the MiG-17.
Mil Mi-1 Hare
The Mi-1 was not operated by the Cambodian military forces.
UTVA 56
Four UTVA 56 utility aircraft were reported to have been delivered from Yugoslavia in 1964. In fact only one example of this variant was ever built. The variant operated by the KAF was the UTVA 60.
Khmer Air Force, KhAF 1970-1975:
Bell UH-1D
The UH-1D variant was not operated by the Cambodian military forces. Possible confusion with Air America operations. The variant operated by the KhAF was the UH-1H.
Fairchild AU-23A Peacemaker
A few AU-23As were reported in service in 1974. Possible confusion with Air America operations.
Kaman H-43 Huskie
Two H-43 Huskies were reported to have been in service. None delivered.
Air Force of the Kampuchea Liberation Army, AFKLA 1975-1979:
Bell 47
Some Bell 47 helicopters were reported as being in service circa 1977-79. None were delivered.
Fairchild C-119
Some C-119s were reported to have been in service circa 1977-79, but this must be due to confusion with Fairchild C-123 Providers or sightings of Air America aircraft in the country before 1975.
Kampuchean People's Air Force, KPAF 1985-1992:
Mikoyan Gurevitch MiG-21MF/MiG-21PF
The only MiG-21 variants operated by the Cambodian military forces were the MiG-21bis and MiG-21UM. Possible confusion with VNAF aircraft based in the country.
Yakovlev Yak-11 Moose
Some Yak-11 trainers were reported in service in 1986. None operated.
Royal Cambodian Air Force, RCAF, 1993 until the present day:
Bell UH-1H
37 UH-1H helicopters were reported in use in 2006! This quantity substantially exceeds the number captured by the Khmer Rouge in 1975. None have been operated since the 1980s.
Mikoyan Gurevitch MiG-23MLD
Fourteen were reportedly delivered in the 1990s. None ever seen.
Mil Mi-24
Three Mi-24 were reported still in service in 2006. The 3 Mi-24s obtained by the KPAF in 1985 were second-hand and did not stay in service for very long.
SOCATA TB-10 Tobago
One TB-10 reportedly delivered in 1996. Did not enter service.
Sud Aviation SA316 Alouette III
One "SE3160" was reported in use in 2006. The three SA316Bs captured by the Khmer Rouge in 1975 are not thought have been used after 1979.
