(Kingdom of Thailand)
Geography:
The central region of Thailand comprises a flat alluvial plain formed by a number of major rivers including the Chao Phraya. This region is very fertile but is also the most densely populated. The northern and western borders are marked by north-south mountain ranges which are heavily forested and extend southwards through the long Isthmus of Kra to the Malaysian border. The north east of Thailand is the poorest region of the country. It features a low-lying plain called the Korat Plateau, which is covered by open forest and scrub. Dry and infertile, it is separated from the rest of Thailand by the Fai mountain range. The eastern border of the country is defined by the Mekong river.
Thailand has a total land area of 514,000 sq km (198,457 sq miles) and had a population of 59.6 million in 2000. The main ethnic groups are Thai 80%, Chinese 12%, Malay 4% and Khmer and others 4%. Most of Thailand's one million Moslem Malays live in the southern region, close to the Malaysian border. They feel stronger affinity with Moslems in Malaysia than with Thai culture, and this has given rise to a secessionist movement. The capital city is Bangkok (also known as Krung Thep).
