Unit History


Grupo 8 de Caza

 

Role: Fighter.


The unit was formed on 21.9.1973 as Escuadrón I de Caza Interceptora with the recently arrived Dassault Mirage IIID/E and its subordinated Escuadrilla de Servicios with two Beech B-45, one FMA-Cessna A.182J and one Cessna 320. The unit became Grupo 8 de Operaciones on 5.1.1976, which was later renamed Grupo 8 de Caza. Escuadrón II was formed in 1979, when the second patch of Mirage IIIE arrived.

 

During the Beagle Conflict a Escuadrón Mirage Comodoro Rivadavia was formed at BAM Comodoro Rivadavia with five Mirage IIIE and one Mirage IIID. The squadron was reformed during the Falklands War together with a Escuadrón Mirage Río Gallegos.

 

The group was disbanded on 16.5.1988, when its aircraft were passed to Escuadrón II of the Grupo 6 de Caza.

 

 

Escuadrón I

Role: Fighter.

The unit was formed on 5.1.1976 and disbanded on 16.5.1988, when its aircraft were passed to Escuadrón II of the Grupo 6 de Caza.

Escuadrón II

Role: Fighter.

The unit was formed in 1979 and disbanded on 16.5.1988, when its aircraft were passed to Escuadrón II of the Grupo 6 de Caza.

Escuadrilla de Servicios

Role: Transport/Liaison.

The unit was formed as part of Escuadrón 1 de Caza Interceptora on 21.9.1973 with two Beech B-45, one FMA-Cessna A.182J and one Cessna 320.

Escuadrón Mirage Comodoro Rivadavia

Role: Fighter.

The unit was formed during the Beagle Conflict on 8.12.1978 at BAM Comodoro Rivadavia with five Mirage IIIE and one Mirage IIID and returned to its home base by the beginning of 1979.

The unit was formed on 5.4.1982 at BAM Comodoro Rivadavia with five Mirage IIIE (I-003,I-008,I-010,I-015,I-018) and one Learjet 35A (LV-OAS). On 23.4.1982 Mirage IIIE (I-015 and I-018) were transferred to Escuadrón Mirage Río Gallegos. Both units conducted 46 CAP and interception missions over the Falkland Islands and 46 over the mainland during the Falklands War and lost two aircraft before the squadrons were disbanded and the aircraft returned to Base Aérea Militar Mariano Moreno.

Escuadrón Mirage Río Gallegos

Role: Fighter.

The unit was formed on 5.4.1982 at BAM Río Gallegos with five Mirage IIIE (I-011,I-014,I-016,I-017,I-019). Some days later the unit received two additional aircraft (I-005,I-006) and on 23.4.1982 two Mirage IIIE (I-015,I-018) were transferred from Escuadrón Mirage Comodoro Rivadavia. Two aircraft (I-015,I-018) were shot down over the Falkland Islands during operations on 1.5.1982. Both units conducted 46 CAP and interception missions over the Falkland Islands and 46 over the mainland during the Falklands War and lost two aircraft before the squadrons were disbanded and the aircraft returned to Base Aérea Militar Mariano Moreno.
