Narrative Summary:
The Dirección de Aeronáutica de Gendarmería was
established on 8.10.1955 with three I.Ae. 20 El Boyero light observation aircraft
and one Macchi MB.308 as well as one Max Holste MH-1521 Broussard. On 17.7.1959 the
unit was renamed División de Transportes
Aéreos and received some Fairchild-Hiller FH-1100 helicopters and Cessna
aircraft during the next years.
The unit was another time renamed and became Subdirección de Aviación, consisting of the Escuadrón Apoyo de Aviación, Escuadrón Mantenimiento de Aviación and the Centro de Instrucción de Aviación. Later the unit was again renamed Departamento de Aviación de la Gendarmeria Nacional.
Today the unit is called Servicio de Aviación (SEAV) de la Gendarmeria Nacional, composed of the Centro de Operaciones Aéreas, which operates all aircraft and helicopters, the Servicio de Mantenimiento and the Centro de Instrucción de Aviación. The assigned aircraft and helicopters are used in border patrol, liaison, SAR, light transport and anti-drug operations.
