It shares a border in the north with the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, in the west with the Guatemalan department of Petén, and in the south with the Guatemalan department of Izabal. To the east in the Caribbean Sea, the second-longest barrier reef in the world flanks much of the 386 kilometers of predominantly marshy coastline. It is located between 87° to 89° western geographic longitude and 16° to 18° northern geographic latitude and has an area of 22,973 square kilometres (8,870 square miles). The latitude and longitude of the capital, Belmopán, are about 88°48' W and 16°18' N.
