Brief National History:

Chile was colonised from 1541 onwards by the Spanish colonial empire. From 1810 to 1818 Chile fought the War of Independence and succeeded. In the Pacific War 1879 to 1883 against Bolivia and Peru Chile won a region at the junction of the three countries. 1924 the Armed Forces intervened in support of the President and 1927 Colonel del Campo, the leader of the military intervention, became President from 1927 to 1931. From 1932 to 1970 there was relative stability in the government. After the election of Salvadore Allende and the conversation to a marxist state, the Armed Forces made a coupe d'etat in 1973, during which Salvadore Allende died and General Augusto Pinochet became dictator of Chile until 1990. After democratic elections in 1994 Eduardo Frei became President.
