The unit was formed as
Escuadrón de Caza in ????. The unit was equipped with Republic F-47D in
1947. The replacement for this aircraft came in 1956, when the unit was
reequipped with Canadair Sabre 6 (F-86F), which were supplemented in 1963 by
four F-86F from Spain. The Sabres were retired in 1968. Lacking any air defence capacity, the Colomobian Air
Force tried to find a new fighter aircraft in the United States, but the U.S.
government was reluctant to sell modern jet fighters. So Colombia went to France
to buy Dassault Mirage 5 fighter aircraft and the
Escuadrón de Combate 111 was formed in
1972.
