![]() Geography: Guatemala's complex geography can be simplified into three basic regions; the Pacific coastal plain, the central highlands and the eastern lowlands. The Pacific coastal plain, a narrow ribbon of tropical grassland, merges with the central highlands, which occupy over 40 per cent of the total land area of the country. The central highlands are a continuation of the West American Mountain system, which extends from Cape Horn to Alaska. Guatemala is bordered in the north by Mexico, in the east by Belize and in the south and south-east by El Salvador and Honduras. It is located between 88° to 93° western geographic longitude and 13° to 18° northern geographic latitude and has an area of 108,890 square kilometres (42,032 square miles). The latitude and longitude of the capital, Ciudad de Guatemala, are about 90°31' W and 14°37 ' N.
