Unit History


Brigada Aérea I

 

Role: Transport/Liaison/Support.


The unit was formed on 31.12.1935 as Base Aeronáutica No.1 at Aeródromo Militar "Cap. Boiso Lanza". During the next years the unit got many new aircraft from France and Italy. In 3.1940 the organisation of the Base was changed and one Escuadrilla Bombardeo with Potez 25, one Escuadrilla de Información with IMAN Ro.37bis and Waco JHD and one Sección de Entrenamiento y Aviones Estafeta with one Tiger Moth and one Hanriot H-431 were formed.

 

On 23.3.1947 Grupo de Aviación 3 (Bombardeo) with some Douglas C-47 Dakota and Beech AT-11 Kansan was formed as part of Base Aeronáutica No.1, which moved to the new Base Aérea Gral. Berisso at Carrasco in 8.1947. In 1951 the Grupo de Aviación No.2 (Caza) with North American F-51D Mustang and the Grupo de Aviación 4 (Transporte) with C-47 were formed. The Agrupamiento Provisorio de Búsqueda y Rescate became the first helicopter unit of the Base in 1955 and was renamed Grupo de Aviación No.5 (Búsqueda y Rescate) in 1965.

 

Base Aeronáutica No.1 became Brigada Aérea I on 9.7.1965.

 

Another transport group, Grupo de Aviación 6 (Transporte) with some EMB-110C, was formed in 1976. On 7.3.1978 a reorganisation took place in Brigada Aérea I and the Regimiento Táctico No.1 with the Grupos de Aviación Nos. 3 (Transporte), 4 (Transporte), 6 (Transporte), Grupo Fotográfico, Regimiento de Base, Grupos de Material, Administración y Personal e Intendencia and the Grupo de Aviación No.5 (Búsqueda y Rescate) was formed as part of Brigada Aérea I.

 

In 1980 the Grupo de Aviación 2 (Caza) became part of Regimiento Táctico No.2 of the Brigada Aérea II at Durazno.On 27.4.1994 the last reorganisation took place and all Grupos became Escuadróns. Escuadrón Aéreo 3 (Transporte) was formed with personell and equipment, which came from the former Regimiento Táctico No.1 and the old Grupos de Aviación 3, 4 y 6 (Transporte).

Escuadrilla de Información

Role: Reconnaissance.

The unit was formed in 3.1940 with IMAM Ro.37bis and Waco JHD.

Escuadrilla Bombardeo

Role: Bomber.

No unit history known. From 1939 to 1942 the unit is also refered as Escuadrilla de Bombardeo No.4.

The unit was formed in 3.1940 with with one Tiger Moth and one Hanriot H-431.

Escuadrón Aéreo 2 (Caza)

Role: Fighter.

The unit was formed as Escuadrilla de Caza on 15.1.1924 with a pair of SPAD 13.C1 and was later renamed Escuadrilla de Caza 2 and reequipped with Waco JDH. In 1941 the unit was disbanded and the Waco JDH were assigned to the Escuadrilla de Información of Base Aeronáutica No.1. The unit was reformed as Grupo de Aviación No.2 (Caza) on 8.5.1951 as part of Base Aérea No.1 with the newly arrived F-51D Mustang. In 1978 the unit became part of Brigada Aérea II and received its current name after a reorganisation of the FAU in 1994.

Escuadrón Aéreo 3 (Transporte)

Role: Transport.

The unit was formed on 27.4.1994 with personell and equipment, which came from the former Regimiento Táctico No.1 and the old Grupos de Aviación 3, 4 y 6 (Transporte). The Grupo de Aviación 3 (Transporte) was formed on 23.3.1947 as Grupo Aeronáutico 3 with some Douglas C-47 Dakota and Beech AT-11 Kansan. In 1950 the unit received some North American B-25J Mitchell and was renamed Grupo de Aviación 3 (Bombardeo) and in 1951 the C-47 formed a new transport unit, the Grupo de Aviación 4 (Transporte). The Grupo de Aviación 3 (Bombardeo) was renamed Grupo de Aviación 3 (Transporte) on 17.9.1964. Since the 1950s the Sección Fotografía, which was founded in the 1920s as part of the Escuela Militar de Aviación, with North American AT-6 and one Aero Comander 680 were part of the group. In 1978 the Grupo Fotográfico of the Fuerza Aérea (today Servicio de Sensores Remotos Aeroespaciales) was formed as an independent unit of the group. In 1975 the group received some Embraer C-95 Bandeirante, but these aircraft fromed on 13.1.1976 a new transport unit, the Grupo de Aviación 6 (Transporte). The unit got its present name on 27.4.1994.

Grupo de Aviación 4 (Transporte)

Role: Transport.

The unit was formed with some C-47 Dakota from the Grupo de Aviación 3 (Transporte) on 18.6.1951. The group was disbanded in 1994, when the Escuadrón Aéreo 3 (Transporte) was established.

Escuadrón Aéreo 5 (Helicopterós)

Role: Transport/Liaison/Support.

The unit was formed on 25.7.1955 as Agrupamiento Provisorio de Búsqueda y Rescate with two Bell OH-13G. In July 1964 the unit got two Hiller OH-23F Raven (UH-12E). On 9.7.1965 the name was changed to Grupo de Aviación No.5 (Búsqueda y Rescate) with the addition of two Hiller OH-23F and one Cessna U-17A Skywagon. From 1970 the unit got eight UH-1H Iroquois. By 1975, another six ex-USAF, utility role UH-1B were obtained. The unit got its present name on 27.4.1994.

Grupo de Aviación 6 (Transporte)

Role: Transport.

In 1975 The Grupo de Aviación 3 (Transporte) received some Embraer EMB-110C Bandeirante, but these aircraft formed on 13.1.1976 a new transport unit, the Grupo de Aviación 6 (Transporte). The group was disbanded in 1994, when the Escuadrón Aéreo 3 (Transporte) was established.
