History

Narrative Summary:
The Belgian Air Cadets organisation was established in the early 1950s to engage young people in aviation and eventually a career in the Air Force (now the Air Component). This is achieved through the operation of a substantial fleet of gliders based around the country. Half-a dozen Piper Super Cubs were obtained as glider tugs. Up to 50% of the Belgian graduate military pilots are former Air Cadets.

Current Status:
Around 24 high performance sports gliders are currently operated, together with five glider tugs.

National Insignia:

The main marking is displayed on the fin of some of the older gliders and on the glider tugs. Newer gliders omit the marking and carry the titling 'Belgian Air Cadets'.

Aircraft Serial Numbering System(s):
Belgian Air Cadet gliders are numbered in a continuous sequence from 1 to 99 with the prefix PL for Planeur (glider), e.g. Grob G102 Astir PL76. On some gliders the PL prefix is omitted.

The Piper Super Cubs come under the control of CMVV/MZVC (Centre Militaire de Vol a Voile/Militaire Zweefvlieg Centrum) of 1 Wing of the Air Component, whilst the gliders are owned by a civilian group.
