Balkan Wars - Military Air Bases and Airfields

This page gives details of some of the air bases and airfields which were used by Bulgarian Air Force fixed-wing aircraft during the First and Second Balkan Wars. Note: All dates are Julian calendar (13 days behind the Gregorian calendar).

? location
The site of the 13 August 1912 flight by Simeon Petrov in a Bleriot XXI - the first Bulgar to pilot an aeroplane over Bulgaria - is not specified in reference sources.

Balabancik
Airfield used by 3 Aeroplane Otdelenie by late January 1913 on the Bulayir front (towards Galipoli) supporting the 4th Army.

Çerkezköy
Airfield used by 2 Aeroplane Otdelenie from 24 January 1913 onwards on the Catalca front, supporting the 1st and 3rd Armies.

Kabakçaköy
Refuelling airfield established in mid March 1913 for use by 2 Aeroplane Otdelenie aircraft to extend the range of it's aircraft in the direction of Constantinople.

Kavak
Airfield close to 4th Army Headquarters. Used by 3 Aeroplane Otdelenie pilots for speedy delivery of reconnaissance information. Used circa March 1913.

Mustafapasa
City in Eastern Thrace known as Svilengrad today. The Aeroplane Otdelenie had moved to a newly prepared airfield 1 km south east of the city by 14 October 1912. It became the main base for 1 Aeroplane Otdelenie in the air support of the 2nd Army in the siege of Adrianople (Edirne). By late January 1913 an aeroplane repair workshop and aeroplane depot had been established here.

Razgrad
Razgrad is located in north east Bulgaria. An airfield near Razgrad was used during the Sumen army manoeuvres of 7-10 September 1912 by one Bleriot XXI. The airfield proved to be not very suitable and the aircraft suffered an accident on landing after it's first reconnaissance sortie.

Seres
An airfield on the Greek front used by 3 Aeroplane Otdelenie June 1913 to support the 2nd & 4th Armies during the Second Balkan War. Over-run by Greek forces 23 June 1913.

Simeonovgrad
Operating base for the Aeroplane Otdelenie on 5 October 1912, with one Bleriot XXI. Located over 100 km away from the Bulgarian-Turkish front line upon the outbreak of the First Balkan War and therefore soon abandoned.

Slivnica
Slivnica (Slivnitsa?) airfield on the Serbian front, used by 2 Aeroplane Otdelenie June-July 1913 to support the 1st and 3rd Armies during the Second Balkan War.

Sofia Central Station, Station airfield
Home of the combined Aeroplane and Balloon Otdelenie after the 1 August 1913 demobilisation. Became home of the aeroplane repair workshop and later the first home of the Aeroplane School for training new pilots.
