Unit History
2 Aeroplane Otdelenie (2)
Role: Reconnaissance/Bomber/Fighter
The second unit to be designated 2 Aeroplane Otdelenie was created on 26 April 1916, when the Aeroplane Komanda from 1 Aeroplane Otdelenie at Udovo was increased to squadron strength. It operated under the First Army to cover the Vardar river area on the Salonica front. It initially conducted reconnaissance and bombing sorties. In 1917 it acquired it's first fighter aircraft and commenced limited offensive operations against Entente aircraft. By January 1918 enemy air superiority was such that only essential reconnaissance sorties could be flown, including some at night.
The unit flew it's last operational mission on 28 September 1918 from Dupnica Airfield. The war ended the following day. In the demobilisation after the war, the unit withdrawn to Bojurishte and then disbanded. It's aircraft were catalogued by the Allied Control Commission and then scrapped.
The commanding officer was Captain Nikifor Bogdanov (April 1916 - 1918?).
