Unit History

Aeroplane Depot
Role: Aviation Support

The role of the Aeroplane Depot was supply the Aeroplane Otdelenie with personnel, aircraft, equipment, spares and tools. It was first established at Mustafapasa in January 1912 during the First Balkan War. It's location during the Second Balkan War is not known. When peace returned it moved to the airfield at Sofia Station, alongside the Aeroplane and Balloon Otdelenie.

In the run-up to Bulgaria's entry into the First World War, a Fighter Komando (detachment), also known as the Auxiliary Aeroplane Platoon, was created for the air defence of Sofia. The fighters were initially flown by German pilots, but Bulgarian pilots later took over after training. The Depot was located at Bojurishte for most of the First World War. It then moved to an unknown location before the Aeroplane Workshop and Depot deployed to 'their former site at Bojurishte' by late December 1920.

The commanding officer was Captain Dimitar Sakelarov.
