The Country

Geography:
The world's second largest country (after Russia), Canada occupies the northern portion of the North American continent. It stretches for some 5,000 km (3,100 miles) from the Pacific seaboard to Newfoundland, and 4,000 km (2,800 miles) from Ellesmere Island in the Arctic Circle to the US border.
It is bordered by the USA (Alaska) to the west, the Pacific Ocean to the south west, the USA to the south, the Atlantic Ocean to the east and the Arctic Ocean to the north. In topography, Canada resembles a giant saucer, with the Hudson Bay depression at the centre, the Rocky Mountains forming the western rim and the Laurentian Mountains the eastern rim. The Great Lakes and the St Lawrence River provide a key trade route for ocean-going ships, with access from the Gulf of St Lawrence. The region is rich in mineral resources and oil and gas reserves, while the prairies in the southern part of the Central Lowlands are very fertile and ideal for farming.
The Population of 32.9 million (2007 figure) comprises 44% of British origin, 25% of French origin, 20% other European, 4% indigenous indian/Innuit and 7% other. Nearly 90% of Canadians live within 200 km of the border with the United States. The French-speaking population is geographically concentrated in the Quebec region. The capital city is Ottowa.
