The Country
Geography:
The Republic of Croatia is a cresent-shaped state in south-eastern Europe. It is situated in the western part of the Balkan Peninsula. It borders Slovenia and Hungary to the north, Bosnia and Hercegovina and Serbia to the east, and the Adriatic Sea to the south. It is made up of the territories of Dalmatia, Slavonia and most of Istria. The northeast of the country is mostly flat and fertile, while the southwestern part is more rugged and includes the Dinaric Alps. It occupies a land area of 56,558 sq km (21,829 sq miles) and has a population of 4.5 million inhabitants (in 2000). The capital city is Zagreb. In the 1991 census the population comprised 78% ethnic Croats, 12% Serbs and 1% Slavic Muslims and 9% others. More than 76% are Catholics, 11% are Orthodox Christians, and 1% are Muslims, with 12% other faiths.
