Neutral in First World War. 1920 northern part of Schleswig incorporated into Denmark after referendum. Invaded by Germany 9 April 1940 and surrended the same day. Occupied until spring 1945. Founder member of NATO on 4 April 1949. Joined European Community in 1973. Overseas territories comprise Greenland and Faeroe Islands.
