History

Narrative Summary:
The Border Guard was first formed in 1990, under the Ministry of Internal Affairs. It's main tasks are national border patrol and SAR. A National Aviation Group (Riiklik Lennusalk) was added in February 1993 with the donation of two ex-Luftwaffe L-410s by Germany. Helicopters were acquired in 1994, but some were later passed to the Air Force. In April 1997, the Riiklik Lennusalk was renamed Piirivalve Lennusalk (Border Guard Aviation Group).
