The Country
Geography:
One of the most northerly countries in the world, Finland is located in the northern part of Northern Europe. It is bordered to the north by Norway, to the west by Sweden and to the east by Russia. The southern and south-western coasts face the Baltic Sea. The northern quarter of the country is inside the Arctic Circle.
The land consists mainly of a low-lying plateau formed by ancient glaciers and is pockmarked by thousands of relatively shallow lakes. In the south these lakes take up almost 20% of the land area. Forests cover 65% of the land and forestry is a major industry. The total land area is 304,610 sq km (117,610 sq miles).
The Population of 5.2 million (2000 figure) comprises 93% of Finnish origin, with 7% other ethnic groups - including Lapps and Swedes. Some 89% of the people are Evangelical Lutherans, 1% Roman Catholic, 1% Finnish Orthodox and 9% other faiths. The capital city is Helsinki.
