History

Narrative Summary:
Until 1984 all Army air support had been provided by the Air Force (LSK). In March 1984 the Army launched a programme to establish the personnel training and infrastructure necesary to be able to operate it's own helicopters. By November 1984 this programme had been completed, and on 30 November the LSK handed over control of two helicopter wings to the Army. In 1990 the aviation element of the East German Army was absorbed into the Heeresflieger, and the Mil helicopters remained in service until 1994-95 when they were formally retired.

Current Status:
Upon the re-unification of Germany in October 1990, the East Germany Army was disbanded. Aviation units were transferred to the Heeresflieger.
