In March 1984 the Army launched a programme to establish the personnel training and infrastructure necesary to be able to operate it's own helicopters. In 1990 the aviation element of the East German Army was absorbed into the Heeresflieger, and the Mil helicopters remained in service until 1994-95 when they were formally retired.
