The Country

Geography:
Greece is the southern most country on the Balkan Peninsula, in southern Europe. It is bordered by 'Macedonia' and Bulgaria to the north, the Aegean Sea the east, the Sea of Crete to the South, the Ionian Sea to the west and Albania to the north west.
The terrain is mainly mountainous and includes more than 2,000 islands. About 80% of the land surface is classed as mountainous, with the highest point, Mount Olympus, reaching 2,917 m (9,570 ft). Only about one third of the land is cultivated, along the low-lying coastal strips and river deltas. Most of the islands are rocky and mountainous with steep cliffs. The total land area is 130,850 sq km (50,521 sq miles).
The Population of 10.6 million (2000 figure) comprises 98% of Greek origin and 2% other ethnic groups. Some 98% of the people are Greek Orthodox, 1% Muslim and 1% other faiths. The capital city is Athens.
