Narrative Summary:
Corpo Nazionale del Vigili del Fuoco was first established in its present form in 1939. In the 1950s the Corpo began to borrow Air Force aircraft and helicopters for various missions. Circa 1960 a dedicated air support unit was established.

Aircraft and helicopters wear the main marking on the fuselage sides. All types carry the service titles 'VIGILI DEL FUOCO'.
Italian Fire Service aircraft and helicopters carry a two- or three-digit serial number prefixed by the letters VF- (for Vigili del Fuoco), eg: AB.206B-III VF-26. A four-letter code is also carried, in the VFxx or DVFx series, eg: VFAN for the same AB.206.
