Narrative Summary:
Initially created as the Corpo delle Guardia Pubblica Sicurezza. In 1981 the Corpo was de-militarised and renamed to its present title. In 1962 the Corpo began to borrow Air Force helicopters for various missions. In 1971 a dedicated air support unit was established.

Aircraft and helicopters wear the main marking on the fuselage sides. All types carry the service titles 'POLIZIA'.
Italian Police helicopters carry a two- or three-digit serial number prefixed by the letters PS- (for Polizia di Stato), eg: AB.206A PS-24. Fixed-wing aircraft are similar, but have a letter A or B ahead of the number, eg: P.180 Avanti PS-B15.
