National History
Occupied by Germany throughout First World War. 1921 entered into economic union with Luxembourg. Invaded by Germany 10 May 1940 and occupied until 1944. Founder member of NATO on 4 April 1949. Joined Benelux Economic Union in 1948 and European Community in 1956.
