Key Dates:
1st C. BC    Present-day Montenegro inhabited by Illyrian people.
9 AD    Illyricum invaded and annexed by Roman Empire.
400-600 AD    Illyricum raided by semi-nomadic invaders - including Goths and Avars.
500-600 AD    Slavs from the Baltic region begin to settle in the Montenegro region.
600-700 AD    Serbs and Croats arrive in a second wave of migration.
c.650 AD    Slavs establish territory of Doclea (Duklja).
10th Century    Semi-independent dukedom of Duklja formed.
1077    Duklja recognised as independent state by the Pope. Also known as Zeta, after the local river.
1183-1186    Duke of Serbia conquers Duklja/Zeta and imposes Orthodox Christianity.
1296    The name Montenegro first mentioned in a charter - originally as part of Zeta.
1356    Kingdom of Zeta breaks away from Serbia. Approximates to present-day Montenegro.
1435    Montenegro begins to replace Zeta as the name of the Kingdom.
1516    Zeta now officially known as Montenegro.
1861-1862    War against Ottoman Empire.
2 July 1876    Montenegro declares war on Ottoman Empire.
13 July 1878    Treaty of Berlin secures territorial gains from Ottomans and recognises Montenegro as an independent sovereign state.
1910    Principality of Montenegro proclaimed a Kingdom.
8 October 1912    Montenegro declares war on Ottoman Empire, starting the First Balkan War.
3 December 1912    Turkey, Serbia, Montenegro, Greece & Bulgaria sign armistice.
November 1913    Treaty of Bucharest ends the Second Balkan War.
28 July 1914    The Austro-Hungarian Empire attacks Serbia, starting World War I.
6 August 1914    Montenegro declares war on Austro-Hungary.
January 1916    Austro-German forces invade and occupy Montenegro. King forced into exile in France
September 1918    Serbian forces liberate Montenegro from Austrian occupation.
October 1918    Austro-Hungarian Empire near collapse following major defeats in World War I.
29 October 1918    Proclamation of the State Of Slovenians, Croats And Serbs.
26 November 1918    Montenegro deposes its king, who opposed union, and votes to join the new Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes.
1 December 1918    Montenengro is incorporated into the newly formed Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes.
7 January 1919    Start of national uprising against union with Serbia.
1926    Military campaign to suppress national uprising completed, with some 3000 Montenegrins killed and a similar number wounded.
3 October 1929    Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes is renamed Yugoslavia.
6 April 1941    Yugoslavia is invaded and occupied by the military forces of Germany and its allies.
29 November 1945    Federal Republic of Yugoslavia established, with Montenegro as one of the republics.
13 July 1946    Podgorica renamed Titograd after the wartime resistance leader General Tito.
1990    Multi-party political system introduced.
1991    Break up of old Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.
2 April 1992    Titograd reverts to original name of Podgorica.
27 April 1992    Montenegro joins with Serbia in new Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.
6-30 April 1999    NATO aircraft attack military targets in Montenegro during Kosovo War.
November 1999    Montenegro adopts the Deutschmark as an official currency.
8 December 1999    Serbian troops occupy Podgorica Airport for one day during period of poor relations with Belgrade.
1 January 2002    Montenegro begins the switch to the Euro as it's official currency.
14 March 2002    Looser union of 'Serbia and Montenegro' agreed.
4 February 2003    Union of 'Serbia and Montenegro' formally approved.
11 May 2003    Pro-independence politician Filip Vujanovic wins presidential election.
21 May 2006    Montenegrins vote narrowly in favour of independence.
3 June 2006    Montenegro parliament declares independence from Serbia.
