Narrative Summary:
The Montenegrin Police Aviation Unit forms part of the Vazduhoplovna jedihica Vlade Crne Gora (Montenegro Government Aviation Unit). The first Montenegrin Police helicopter, an AB206A, was obtained in 1972. In the early 1990s three SA341 Gazelles were taken over from the air force, to fly utility missions. In the late 1990s the Serbian Nationalist Government in Belgrade was threatening Montenegro with military intervention. In response, the Montenegrin Police established special police units trained in military tactics. An AB212 and an AB412 were purchased to support these units. Open conflict almost broke out in December 1999 between Montenegrin Police and federal armed forces but actual fighting was avoided. After the fall of the Milosevic government, relations returned to normal. The Police Aviation unit reports to the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
