Military Air Bases and Airfields
This page gives details of the air bases and airfields which were, or are, used by the Royal Netherlands Naval Air Service. MVK = Marinevliegkamp.
Netherlands
MVK De Kooij (IATA: DHR, ICAO: EHKD)
Also spelt 'De Kooy'. Located on the Waddenzee coast, just south of Den Helder, (the main naval base), north east Netherlands. Officially established in October 1917 as a landplane base. The MLDs fourth dedicated base. Used for pilot training from 1918. Currently home of the MLD helicopter squadrons.

MVK Valkenburg (ICAO: EHVB)
Located between Wassenaar and Katwijk, near Leiden on the west coast of the Netherlands. Constructed for the Army Air Service in 1938, and taken over by the MLD in 1947. Former home of the P-3C Orion squadrons. Closed on 31 December 2006.

MVK De Mok
Located on the south coast of the island of Texel, the island just north of Den Helder. Construction work started in 1914, and was completed on 21 August 1917, becoming the MLDs second dedicated base. It was the main seaplane base following the formal establishment of the MLD.
Flushing
seaplane base located on the island of Walcheren. Constructed in 1919 but closed down by 1922.
Maastricht Airport (IATA: MST, ICAO: EHBK)
Located north east of Maastricht (Limburg). Former home base of the 2 MOTU Beech Super King Air 200 used for operational flying training.

MVK Schellingwoude
Located north of Amsterdam. Construction completed in 1915, becoming the MLDs first dedicated base in April 1916. Seaplane base. Location of the assembly of the first few MLD aircraft. Still used in May 1940.
MVK Veere
Seaplane base located on the island of Walcheren in the province of Zeeland. The MLDs third dedicated base, in use by 1917. Closed down in 1918 and subsequently taken over by Fokker for use as an aircraft factory. Temporarily used in April-May 1940 as a dispersal base.
Netherlands East Indies
MVK Halong
Major support base. Located on Halong Bay, 5 miles northeast of Ambon City. Built 1937-38. Closed mid December 1941 to prevent use by the enemy.
MVK Kalkas
Support base located on the south shore of Lake Tondano in the Northern Celebes. Opened 1 October 1940.
MVK Morokrembangen
Located on the Dutch East Indies island of Java. Situated on the north east coast, just to the west of Soerabaja, on the far side of the Kali River at Tandjoeng Perak on the Madoera Strait. Opened on 30 June 1925 as a large airfield and seaplane base. Rated the largest and best equipped naval air base in the Far East. HQ for MLD NEI.
MVK Priok
Located on the NEI island of Java, the air station was located near Tandjong Priok, the harbour for Batavia City (now Jakarta). Situated close to and just west of the warship base of the same name in north-western Java, not far from Batavia. Completed February 1919 for use by seaplanes. The first seaplane base in the NEI.
Balikpapan
Support base on the east side of Balikpapan Bay. Located on the east Borneo coast. Built during 1940.
Dore Bay
Auxiliary base located near Manokwari, New Guinea, on the Vogelkop.
Koepang
Support base in West Timor that was only partially operational in December 1941.
Makassar
Auxiliary base.
Menado
Auxiliary base in Menado harbour on the Celebes Islands. Only used as an emergency landing ground.
Poelau Sambo
Poelau Sambo,(or Paeloe Somboe), in Sumatra was an auxiliary base in the Riouw Archipelago in the Singapore Straits.
Pontianak
Support base on the Kapoeas River, outside the city of Pontianak, West Borneo. Located on the southwest Borneo coast. Built during 1940.
Sabang
Auxiliary base at Poelau Weh in north Sumatra.
Sambas
Auxiliary seaplane base on the Sambas River in Northwest Borneo.
Soerabaja
Located on Java, very close to Morokrembangen, Soerabaja was an Army airfield used by MLD landplanes.
Sorong
Auxiliary base on Dom Island in the Sele Strait on the northwest coast of the Vogelkop in western New Guinea.
Tarakan
Major support base near Lingkas on the southwest coast of the island. An island off northeast Borneo. Modernised in 1940.
Ternate
Auxiliary base on Molukka Island. Frequently used by the flying boats of GVT 5 in December 1941 and January 1942.
Prapat
Major support base also known as Lake Toba or Tobameer. The air station was located at Prapat, on the east side of the lake in northwest Sumatra.
Other Territories
Biak
Located on the island of Biak, off western New Guinea. Mainly used after the independence of the NEI as Indonesia, as western New Guinea was not part of this territory. More accurately named Borokoe Aerodrome, located close to two other former wartime airfields.
Dr. Albert Plesman Airport/Boch Van Hato (IATA: CUR, ICAO: TNCC)
Military title is Vliegbasis Hato, civil title Hato International Airport. Located at Willemstad in the central part of the island of Curacao, in the Dutch Antilles, Southern Carribbean. Officially known until 1954 as Hato.
