Unit History
No.2 Squadron
Role: Fighter-pilot training
Formed 17 October 1949 at Valkenburg as the fifth Firefly squadron. In 1950 deployed aboard HrMS Karel Doorman for a cruise to the Antilles, where the unit was disbanded shortly afterwards.
15 October 1951 sqn reformed with the Firefly. Deployed to aircraft carrier HrMS Karel Doorman. In mid 1954 the unit converted to the Avenger for the ASW role. Participated in a number of cruises aboard the HrMS Karel Doorman during 1954 and 1955, and on HMS Bulwark in late 1955.
Completed a further cruise in 1958. Transferred to the Antilles in Spring 1959 where the unit was disbanded again.
Reformed 28 December 1962 by renumbering 320 sqn, equipped with S-2A Trackers. Resumed HrMS Karel Doorman cruises, with main shore base at Valkenburg. 1968 HrMS Karel Doorman withdrawn from service. In 1969 the S-2 aircraft was retired and the sqn took over the functions of an OCU for Neptune and Atlantic crews, borrowing aircraft from other units (actually 320 and 321 sqns) as required.
From July 1982 it acted as the OCU for the P-3C Orions of 320 and 321 sqns - using aircraft borrowed from these units. Officially titled MOTU (Maritime Operations Training Unit). From 1988 it has leased one Beech Super King Air 200 for advanced training purposes from Valkenburg and Maastricht Airport.
