Norway
(Kongeriket Norge/Kingdom Of Norway)
The Country
Geography:
The Kingdom of Norway is located in the western portion of Scandinavia in Northern Europe. It is bounded on the west by the Atlantic Ocean and the North Sea, on the north by the Arctic Ocean, on the North East by Russia and Finland, on the East by Sweden and on the south the Skaggerak, separating it from Denmark. Norway occupies an area of 323,895 sq km (125,057 sq miles) and has a population of 4.4 million (1999 data).
Much of the country is mountainous, with few areas of flatland. About 80% of the country is above 1,500 feet (460 metres) in height. Norway also controls the Svalbard archipelago, located in the Arctic Ocean. The largest group is the Spitzbergen Islands which are mountainous and largely covered with ice.
Norway has minimal immigrant population, with 95% Norwegian, 1% Lapp and 4% others. 89% of the population are Lutheran Christians, 1% Roman Catholic and 10% other beliefs. A harsh climate and rugged terrain has encouraged Norwegians to look to the sea for their livelihood. The capital city is Oslo.
