The Country

Geography:
Romania is located on the Black Sea coast in south eastern Europe. It is bordered by Bulgaria to the south, Serbia to the south west, Hungary to the north west, Ukraine to the north, Moldova and Ukraine to the north east and the Black sea to the south east.
The River Danube defines the southern border. The central region of the country is dominated by the Carpathian Mountains, which run north west - south east before turning east-west in a great arc. The southerly mountain range is also called the Transylvanian Alps and this contains the highest mountains in Romania, rising to 2548 m (8360 ft). The low-lying plains at the foot of the mountains have very fertile soil. The total land area is 230,340 sq km (88,934 sq miles).
The Population of 22.6 million (2000 figure) comprises 89% of Romanian origin, 9% Magyar (Hungarian), 1% Romany and 1% other ethnic groups. Some 87% of the people are Romanian Orthodox, 5% Roman Catholic, 4% Protestant, 1% Greek Catholic, 1% Greek Orthodox and 2% other faiths. The capital city is Bucharest.

Civil Aircraft Registrations:
Romanian civil aircraft were registered in the series C-RAAA onwards from 1919, then CV-AAA onwards 1929-1936, but this changed to YR-AAA onwards in 1936. Gliders use the YR- prefix with numerical registrations..
