History

Narrative Summary:
When the Czechoslovak republic was divided into the Czech republic and the Slovak republic in 1993, the Czech republic retained the existing "Letecka sluzba federalniho policejniho sboru", while in the Slovak republic a new organisation combing Police and Government air transport duties was founded called "Letecky utvar Ministerstva vnutra Slovenskej republiky" - Aviation body of Ministry of Interior affairs of Slovak republic.

Note: This page only covers the Police operations of the ABMI. Provision of Government Transport duties by the ABMI is described separately.

Key Dates:
1 January 1993    Czechoslovakia becomes Czech & Slovak Republic - Slovak Ministry of Interior affairs aviation unit split off.

Current Status:
The ABMI currently undertakes the following types of air operations:

Flights for Slovak police
Flights for Slovak fire brigade, quenching of forest fires and fire patrolling
Flights for Mountain brigade
Flights for rest parts of rescue system
Seldom border monitoring
VIP government transport - see separate coverage.
Commercial personal transport (if planes are not busy, permission of Ministry of interiors affairs necessary)
Training flights
(The ABMI does not undertake HEMS flights).

Future Plans:
Two EC 145 helicopters may be added for border monitoring. They could be bought from Shengen funds.

Markings

National Insignia:

Main Marking
The national insignia is carried on the rear fuselage of Police helicopters, with a wide white outline on dark backgrounds. No service titles are carried.

Aircraft Serial Numbering System(s):
The B-xxxx series numbering system was introducted in Czechoslovakia in 1972. For example: Mi-2 B-2909, where B = Bezpecnostni letectvo (Security aviation). First figure "2" = type of helicopter (B-"2"909 for Mi-2, B-"8"939 for Mi-8, B-"17"30 for Mi-171). Second figure "3" = end figure of the year of delivery - 1993 (except for Mi-171). The third and fourth figure "69" are the last figures of the construction number.

Organisation

Main Headquarters:
Bratislava.

Current Organisational Structure:
Main (and only) base is at Letisko Milana Rastislava Stefanika (Airport of M.R. Stefanik - formerly known as Bratislava Ivanka) in Bratislava. The operational readiness varies with time of day: from 7:30 to 15:30 one helicopter is ready to fly in 20 minutes after requesting the flight. From 15:30 to 7:30 one helicopter has to be ready to take-off in 90 minutes after requesting the flight.
