National History
The independence of Switzerland was formally recognised in 1648. Swiss neutrality was guaranteed by the European powers in 1815, following the defeat of Napoleon. A federal constitution was adopted in 1848. Switzerland remained neutral in the First and Second World Wars. The nation is made up of 25 cantons, of which German is majority language in 19 cantons, French in 5 and Italian in one.
