National Markings

This section describes and illustrates the various national insignia used by the Royal Air Force since its formation (several still to add):



        Main MarkingFin Flash

1972-Present
Low visibility markings with white areas deleted. Used on frontline combat aircraft. The main marking is displayed on the fuselage sides of helicopters and aircraft, and also on the upper and lower wings of aircraft. The fin flash is carried on the fin. Service titles are not normally carried - except on tactical transports which carry ROYAL AIR FORCE service titles.



        Main MarkingFin Flash

1950s-Present
Previously used on all RAF, including combat types, but since the 1970s only used for second-line types such as transports and trainers. The main marking is displayed on the fuselage sides of helicopters and aircraft, and also on the upper and lower wings of aircraft. The fin flash is carried on the fin. ROYAL AIR FORCE service titles are carried on transport aircraft.
