Brief History:

1909 first US Navy officer learns to fly. 1909 first experiments with aircraft. March 1911 first aircraft acquired. 1 July 1914 Naval Office of Aeronautics established. 29 August 1916 Naval Flying Corps established. June 1921 Bureau of Aeronautics formed to administer US Naval Aviation.

The main marking is displayed in 4 positions (ie above port and below starboard wing, and on each side of the tailfin) on aircraft - but on fuselage sides only on helicopters. Frontline types carry a toned down version, with the blue and red areas painted black or grey, and the white areas left as background colour. The service title NAVY is displayed on the fuselage sides.
