Ikarus S-49A * Retired *
Forty-five S-49A delivered from 1951. The first prototype of this single-seat fighter was designated S-49 and first flew in 1948. The design was derived from the pre-war IK-3, although it bore a resemblance to the Yak-9. The initial production version, the S-49A with a Klimov VK-105 engine, copied the Yak's mixed wood/metal construction. Production began in 1949 and deliveries officioally commenced on 21 May 1950. Used by the 117th and 204th Aviation Regts. Withdrawn from front-line service in 1957 and retired in 1961. One S-49B was built with a Daimler-Benz DB605 engine.
