Hawker Hurricane Mk.I
Twelve Hurricane Mk.I ordered early 1938 and the first two were flown out to Yugoslavia on 15 December 1938, with the remainder following by ship in spring 1939. Fabric covered wings. 1030 hp Rolls-Royce Merlin II engine. Twelve more Mk.Is supplied by ship in March 1940. Metal skinned wings. 1030 hp Rolls-Royce Merlin III engine. Licence acquired for 100 Hurricane Is to be built by Zmaj (60 aircraft) and Rogozarski (40 aircraft). By April 1941 Zmaj had completed the first batch of 24 aircraft, with 18 already delivered and the other six following after the start of the war. These aircraft had Merlin III engines and fabric covered wings. Twelve machines at Rogozarski had been assembled and were waiting propellers and machine guns, while another batch of 12 was in production. None of the Rogozarski aircraft entered service. A shortage of Merlin engines was expected to halt production beyond 36 aircraft and so one British-built aircraft was successfully flight tested at Zmaj in March 1941 with a 1175 hp Daimler Benz DB 601a engine - it was designated LVT-1 (Technical Aviation Fighter 1). The second batch of 12 at Rogozarski was planned to have DB 601 engines. Thirty-eight Hurricanes in service during the April 1941 invasion, of which 35 were serviceable. Six aircraft were captured by the Germans, and these were later sold to Romania. Another aircraft was captured by the Italians.
