Aircraft Types

Savoia Marchetti S.M.79K
Forty-five SM.79K ordered in mid 1939 and delivered by the end of 1939. Export version of SM.79-I. Three 750 hp Alfa Romeo 126 RC.34K engines. Used in the bomber role. Still in service at the time of the April 1941 attack by Germany. Due to their long range, they were used during the war to evacuate key personnel to friendly countries. Four aircraft flew to Egypt, (one carrying the King), and were subsequently impressed into service by the RAF. Four aircraft flew to the Soviet Union and were soon taken into the VVS. Germany, Italy and Hungary each captured one aircraft. The German example was later passed to the Croatian Air Force.
