Partisan Air Force

Unit History

Squadron of the 5th Corps NOVJ
Role: Close air support

First formed on 21 September 1944 from 8 aircraft captured at Zaluzani airfield near Banja Luka. Combat operations commenced on the first day of the unit's existence. Attacks were made on the Banja Luka fortress where surrounded Ustasa forces were putting up fierce resistance. The Germans later pushed the Partisans out of Banja Luka, forcing the unit to move to other airfields in western and eastern Bosnia. It had performed more than 90 combat sorties and captured two more aircraft, a Ju 87 and a Fizir FP.2. The actions of this unit provided a huge boost to the morale of the ground forces and proved the values of partisan air units in the war.
