Yugoslavia Partisan Air Force
Unit History
Independent Headquarters Escadrille
Role: Close air support
The Independent Headquarters Escadrille was first formed in April 1945 at Mostar, Hercegovina - possibly it was formerly the liaison squadron 'Escadrila za Vezu' which operated two defected Bf 109Gs. The unit was equipped with an assortment of captured or defected aircraft, and manned by pilots who had defected from the Croatian Air Force. In May 1945 the unit bombed Chetnik forces in an area between the Sava and Bosna rivers, escorted by Bf 109Gs which also engaged in ground strafing. The last air action of the war was on 28 May 1945 when a Ju 87 escorted by Bf 109G-10s from the unit bombed some troops who had refused to surrender. A short while later the war ended and most aircraft were put into storage or scrapped.
