The Country

Geography

Bangladesh is located on the delta of the Ganges River in South Asia. It is bordered by India to the north, west and north-east, Burma (Mynamar) to the south east, and the Bay of Bengal to the south.

The terrain of Bangladesh is very low lying, with most parts less than 12 m (39.4 ft) above sea level. The county is crossed by 57 rivers, all flowing into the Ganges Delta, and therefore is quite susceptible to flooding. The three largest rivers are the Ganges (locally called the Padma), the Brahmaputra (locally the Jamuna) and the Meghna. The rich alluvial soil deposited by these rivers makes the land exremely fertile. The land area is 147,570 square kilometres (56,977 square miles).

The country has a population of 142.3 million (2011 figures), making it the most densely populated large country in the world. The population is made up of 98.5% Bengali, 0.2% Bihari, 0.6% various Sino-Tibetan Tribal groups, 0.2% Burmese and 0.5% others. In terms of religion, 89.7% of the population is Muslim, 9.2% Hindu, 0.7% Buddhist, 0.3% Christian and 0.1% other. The capital is Dhaka.
