Brunei is located on the north coast of the island of Borneo in Southeast Asia. The country is separated into two parts by the Limbang valley which is a region of the Malaysian state of Sarawak. Brunei is bordered to the north by the South China Sea and to the south, east and west by Malaysia.
The terrain in the larger western part of Brunei is a flat coastal plain with hills in the west, while the eastern part is more mountainous and reaches up to 1,850 m (6,070 ft). 75% of the areas is forested. Some 97% of the population lives in the western part of the country.
Brunei has a total land area of 5,765 sq km (2,226 sq miles) and had a population of 402,000 in 2011. The main ethnic groups are Malay 66%, Chinese 11%, Indigenous 3% and others 20%. The capital city is Bandar Seri Begawan.
