National territory includes about 750 offshore islands. This republic, the most southern of the states on the Central American isthmus, has a terrain dominated by steep, rugged mountains. Coastal areas are flatter, though are frequently characterised by rolling hills. It is located between 77° to 83° western geographic longitude
and 7° to 10° northern geographic latitude and has an area of 75,517 square kilometres (29,157 square miles). The latitude and longitude of the capital, Ciudad de Panamá, are about 79°33′ W and 8°58′ N.
