The Country

Geography

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is a country in Western Asia, located on the Arabian Peninsula. It is a federation of seven emirates: Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras al-Khaimah, Sharjah, and Umm al-Quwain. The UAE is bordered by Oman to the east, Saudi Arabia to the south and west and the Persian Gulf to the north. It has maritime borders with Qatar and Iran.

The terrain of the country is almost entirely sandy or gravel desert, with little cultivatable land. The coastline comprises a series of salt pans that extend well inland, although there are a few natural harbours. Numerous small islands are situated off the coast. The UAE also has a portion of land along the Gulf of Oman, separated from the rest of the country by the Al Hajar al Gharbi mountains. The total land area is 83,600 sq km (32,278 sq miles).

The population of the UAE is 8.26 million (2010 figures), and is made up of 16.5% UAE Arabs, 58.4% South Asians, 16.7% other Asians and 8.4% Western/Europeans. In terms of religion, 76% are Moslem, 15% Christian, 5% Hindu and 5% others. The capital city is Abu Dhabi.
