Aviation-related Magazines Guide

‘Interception’ is a magazine that deals with issues of Defence, Armed Forces and Foreign Policy. First appearing in April 2005, the magazine has proved to be very popular and well respected.

Typical subject areas covered include: News and functionality of the Greek Armed Forces; Equipment and defense material; Requirements, such as modernization in defense material and institutions/organizations; Foreign policy, especially in regard to issues of defense; International defense developments, with an emphasis on issues of interest to the Greek Armed Forces; Policy and general aviation. English language summaries of some articles are included.

Although nominally a defence magazine, some 80% of the contents appears to be military aviation – including at least one historical article in each issue. The magazine is very well written and has excellent photographs.

‘Model Kit’ was a general interest scale modelling magazine published in the early 1990s. In included a mixture of kit reviews and feature articles on various modelling topics. A good proportion of the subjects were automotive, but each issue included aircraft-related subjects. Only 5 issues published.

Fox2 Magazine

Aviation-related Magazines Guide

‘Fox2 Magazine’ was a free downloadable magazine devoted to modern military aviation. It featured illustrated news reports and articles on many aspects of military aviation around the world. The number of pages in each issue varies from 60-84.

The magazine launched with an issue entitled ‘Autumn 09 Special Report’, followed by issue 2 dated February-March 2010. The last issue appears to be issue 9.

The same publisher has also produced a special issue called ‘X-Rays Vol.1’ devoted to in-depth coverage of the Rafale fighter.

The Country

Geography

Greece is the southern most country on the Balkan Peninsula, in southern Europe. It is bordered by ‘Macedonia’ and Bulgaria to the north, the Aegean Sea the east, the Sea of Crete to the South, the Ionian Sea to the west and Albania to the north west.
The terrain is mainly mountainous and includes more than 2,000 islands. About 80% of the land surface is classed as mountainous, with the highest point, Mount Olympus, reaching 2,917 m (9,570 ft). Only about one third of the land is cultivated, along the low-lying coastal strips and river deltas. Most of the islands are rocky and mountainous with steep cliffs. The total land area is 130,850 sq km (50,521 sq miles).
The Population of 10.6 million (2000 figure) comprises 98% of Greek origin and 2% other ethnic groups. Some 98% of the people are Greek Orthodox, 1% Muslim and 1% other faiths. The capital city is Athens.

1829 small Greek state achieved independence from Turkish rule. 1908 union with Crete. August 1909 Greek army forces change of government. Involved in Balkan wars 1912-1913, resulting in acquisition of territory which nearly doubled Greece’s size. Initially neutral in First World War. June 1917 formally joined Allied coalition in World War 1 – fighting against Turkey and German-Bulgarian forces. 1921-1922 Greco-Turkish war. Peace Treaty signed 24 July 1923. 25 March 1924 Republic declared. 3 Nov 1935 Monarchy restored. April 1936-January 1941 Metaxas dictatorship. Invaded by Italy 28 November 1940 Assisted by British forces, defenders hold off attackers.. 6 April 1941 German attack on Greece. 23 April 1941 Greece defeated and British withdraw. Liberated October 1944. 1944-1949 civil war – communists attempt to seize power by force. Economic and military aid from USA. Summer 1949 communists overwhelmed. Joined NATO in 1952. April 1967 military coup. 1974 tension with Turkey during Turkish invasion of Cyprus – no war was declared. Confrontation led to restoration of democracy July 1974 and partial withdrawal from NATO. October 1980 re-integrated into NATO. Joined European Community in 1981.

The title ‘Strategiki’ means Strategy. ‘Strategiki’ is a monthly magazine focusing on defence and foreign policy, with a special emphasis on the Greek military and defence industry. The first issue was published in October 1994. Issue 31 was dated April 1997.

Aviation-related Magazines Guide

Title means Modern Army. Monthly publication with the first issue published in January 1993. It is published by the same people as Sighroni Aeroporia & Naftiko. It has extensive coverage of Greek Army Aviation. Issue 53 was dated May 1997.
