Harbin H-5

in North Korean Air Force service

History

Eighty of these twin-engine light bombers – a derivative of the Ilyushin Il-28 Beagle – were reportedly supplied by China beginning in the early 1960s. By 1999, the 24th Aviation Regiment, based at Uiju, was the sole Regiment still operating the type, with 40 said to remain in service. Also see Ilyushin Il-28 Beagle.

An unknown quantity of this medium-size helicopter was delivered to North Korea. It is unclear if the helicopters are Russian-built Mi-4s or the Chinese produced model Z-5. One source quotes no less than 48 Z-5s supplied to North Korea.
