Italian Magazines

‘JP4 – Mensile di Aeronautica e Spazio’ is a general interest aviation magazine which covers a good balance of modern/historical and civil/military subjects. It is especially good on world air forces and aircraft operated by the Italian air force. It includes a comprehensive news section, plus modelling, sport aviation and aircraft accidents columns. Originally subtitled just Mensile di Aeronautica, the words e Spazio were added around 2003. Issues from the 1970s appeared in a page format smaller than A4, but a move to full A4 size was made in the 1980s. It is a glossy 64-68 page magazine with many b+w and colour photos and drawings.

First issue dated May 1972. Published monthly to the present day – originally only 11 isues per year, but later 12 issues per year.

The publisher also produced the yearbook ‘Annuario Aerospaziale’ between 1982 and 1988, which carried the JP4 logo on the cover.

The title ‘Volare’ translates as Flying. It included articles on on every aspect of civil, military, commercial aviation, flying schools and aeronautic sports – all in clear and understandable language. ‘Volare’ was always on the scene of current events with in depth reports, together with spectacular photography and articles by well known writers. It was a popular aviation magazine aimed at pilots. Each issue included a monthly supplement called ‘Volare Sport’ (which see) which was devoted to ultralights and sport flying. There were about 80 pages in each issue. Following a financial crisis at the publisher, the title was relaunched in May 2013 after undergoing a substantial redesign. Unfortunately, this was not successful and the magazine closed for good in Novembr 2013.

First issue on sale 1980. Published monthly until issue no.359 (November 2013) when it was closed down.

‘Volare Sport’ was a magazine dedicated to ultralights and sport flying. Although it was distributed as a supplement to the monthly magazine ‘Volare’, it was separately stapled and had its own front cover. Each issue was identified as “allegato al” (attached to) the applicable issue of ‘Volare’. It not clear how many pages where in each issue, but is was probably more than 20.

First issue available in 1993. Published monthly until 2005.

‘Volo’ was a private flying magazine published in the 1950s. It was originally launched with the subtitle Quindicinale dell’Aero Club d’Italia, and contained only about 12 pages. By 1956 it had the subtitle Mensile di vita aeronautica, indicating a change of publishing frequency to monthly. Around 1960 it adopted the distinctive yellow cover design that made it stand out from other publications.

First issue on sale 1951. Published fortnightly (every two weeks) until sometime before 1956, by which time it had become monthly. Publication ceased in 1964.

‘Aeronautica & Difesa’ is a monthly aviation magazine with articles about Italian and international air forces. Each issue has 82 pages. August/September of each year is a combined issue. This magazine does not appear to currently have a website – in fact it’s internet presence is absolutely terrible.
